Location, Location, Location
As you are choosing a site for your greenhouse, be
sure to check that site everyday for a few days, to make sure that
there are no shadows across the greenhouse during the daylight
hours. The sun will need to hit the interior of the greenhouse to
maximize your plant growth. If you place the greenhouse near a shed,
tree or home, you may find a shadow during a certain hour of the
day. To remedy this situation you may just have to move your
proposed greenhouse location by a few feet to get ‘out of’ the
shadows.
When you are getting ready to order and erect your
greenhouse, check with your local building codes to ensure that you
don’t have to get a building permit for the greenhouse. It is my
recommendation that you do this even if you are not going to put
water and electric in your greenhouse so that you can save yourself
time and stress if you run into problems later. Generally you won’t
be required to get a building permit but it is always best to
inquire first.
You will need to consider how well the soil drains
near the greenhouse. It is my recommendation that if you have poor
draining soil, that you learn more about a drainage system for
around your greenhouse, so that when you water your plants, the
excess can flow away from the greenhouse. This not only keeps mud to
a minimum but also will not attract certain bugs to wet areas as
well.
If you are planning on setting your greenhouse far
from your home, how will you water your plants? If you are going to
be hauling water to your home, or using a garden hose, you will need
the greenhouse to be within reach of a watering system to make your
gardening adventure easier. When you make the task easier you are
most likely going to water more often when needed.
What about wind? If you live in a windy location,
it is my recommendation that you use some type of bush or shrubs
near your greenhouse exterior walls to keep the wind against your
walls to a minimum. This helps cut your heat bills in the middle of
the winter freezing months.
